Chinaman Pacific and Frisco R.R. Co.: Short Stories

Meet Frank Chin, The Writer
Often people say that Frank Chin is an activist. This is true, but we shouldn't forget that he is also a writer. After all, it was his play Chickencoop Chinaman that help open doors for Asian American artists. In this book you will read eight great short stories by Frank Chin. The stories include: "Railroad Standard Time", "The Eat and Run Midnight People", "The Chinatown Kid", "The Only Real Day", "Yes, Young Daddy", "Give the Enemy Sweet Sissies and Women to Infatuate Him, and Jades and Silks to Blind Him with Greed", "A Chinese Lady Dies", and "The Sons of Chan". After reading these stories, you will understand why Chin won the American Book Award.

Entertaining right to the end
If you liked Frank Chin's book Donald Duk, and enjoy the short story collections that are sprouting like weeds these days, you'll like this one. :)

And if you liked Maxine Hong Kingston's book The Woman Warrior, and know how much Mr. Chin doesn't like the Mulan spoof Kingston put it, then read the Afterword to this volume (this one alone is a laugh and a half).

This book is 322 pages in length. I have the second printing released in 1997 by The Frisco Museum. The second printing includes a new color pictorial section. Although most photos in the book are black and white, they are quite stunning. The quality is superb throughout. I have read this book many times and with the good length, you can start right back at the beginning when you reach the end. If you are a Frisco Railroad fan or are learning about the Frisco, this book is a must have! 5 stars are not enough.

A Must Have Book For The Frisco Fan
This book is 120 pages in length and was published in 1982. It is soft cover. What a great book this is! I only wish mine was in better condition. Although all of the photographs in the book are black and white, these are truly some of the greatest Frisco photos I have ever seen. I leaf through this book often. There are several pictures of the streamlined steam locomotives both before and after! Also some beautiful pictures taken inside the Diesel Shops in Springfield, Missouri and good Texas Special pictures too. If you are a Frisco Railroad fan or are learning about the Frisco, this book is a must have! This book helps you escape into a world where the Frisco still lives. I could give no book a higher rating.

This book is 122 pages in length and was published in 1976. (In 1995 a 48 page soft cover supplement was released by the same author entitled; Frisco Steam Finale 1946-1952. The supplemental title published by South Platte Press in David City, Nebraska.) The photos in the book are black and white and it is full of great information about Frisco steam locomotives. If you are a Frisco Railroad fan or are learning about the Frisco, this book is a must have! I paid $125 for an author autographed copy of the book. I'm sure you can get one at a better price and make sure you get the supplemental title as well!

Frisco's Kid

Keep em coming
'Frisco's kid' was the first one of Suzanne Brockmann's 'Tall Dark and Dangerous' series I read and after this I was hooked. One of the best things about this book (and all Suzanne's books that i have read) was that it had two stories, the love story between Frisco and Mia and Frisco's attempts to come to terms with the life he is forced to lead. This book has everything you could possibly want in a Romance - passion, humour and the ability to make you cry. The only reason it hasn't got 5 stars is that I have read some other books of the series that are even better (if that's possible). To all readers go and find Suzanne's Tall, Dark and Dangerous series cos they are keepers and the characters never completely disappear after their book.I have all but one of this series and I loved each and every one. So to Suzanne you have to be my best romance writer and believe me the competition is tough. Keep em coming. To readers go and get it - It's definitely worth it. P.S.- If anyone has 'Everyday, Average Jones' by Suzanne Brockmann, please e-mail me at: nennehk@hotmail.com

Great the Second Time Around
Frisco's Kid is a re-released book from Ms. Brockmann's first SEAL team series. It's the third book in the series, with the first two being: Prince Joe and Forever Blue, both of which have also been reprinted recently.

This one is about a tough guy facing a life he hadn't planned on. The brave and strong US Navy SEAL, familiar with using deadly force to protect and serve his country, now has to deal with a crippling injury and his own bitterness while protecting and providing for a 5-year-old niece.

It's one thing to have an alpha male hero come to rescue the heroine and save the day, but what if that alpha male is hurt so badly, that he first must save himself?

Ms. Brockmann pulls no punches as she brings her hero face to face with his circumstances, the challenges, and the opportunities in his life... before finding out whether he really is strong enough to hang on for love or ... is ready to give up and ring the bell.

Great story... and just as timeless the second time around.

THIS RATES MUCH MORE THAN 5 STARS
WOW! Nobody does it better than Brockmann. Once again Suz has written a story that draws you in completely. I know this is a reprint--but its my first time to read. Once I started, I couldn't put it down. It is a definite keeper. Frisco is so wonderful--it just takes time and the love an equally wonderful woman to make him realize it.

There are a few authors that I read without question, Suzanne Brockmann is at the top of that list. If you've never read a Suzanne Brockmann book I highly recommend that you do and any one of her books will do just fine. I've read everything available and haven't been disappointed yet. In the TDD series read Prince Joe first and follow the order. I didn't think it could get better than Prince Joe, but Forever Blue blew me away and Frisco's Kid pushed the mark up even further.

Frisco Pigeon Mambo

Author: C. D. Payne

Loved It!
As a resident of SF, I found the book absolutely hysterical. It's a must read for anyone who has ever lived or loved in this city.

Hilarious homage to San Francisco
Note: It would be helpful to be familiar with "The Maltese Falcon" before reading this book. A familiarity with San Francisco and the area also helps greatly.

The first few pages of this book didn't immediately capture me, but I slogged through, and it was worth it: This book is funny! Even if you hate pigeons, or don't want to hear a story from an animal's point of view, if you are an intelligent person, read this book! Payne's vocabulary continues to astound, and he is the master of unexpected plot twists. He'll have you seeing things from a bird's eye view in no time. Even if these birds weren't convinced that they were human, I have a feeling they'd still think they were pretty hip, continuing to trash talk, sleep around, smoke and drink. They're living the life some people dream about! ...

Just the thing when you need a funny book!
I read this hilarious tale in less than two days, it was just the thing I need to distract me from the horrible events of this week (9/11/01 terrorism attacks on US). I wasn't quite sure an author could pull off a whole book about pigeons who believed they were human, but Payne did it. Now to order Payne's other books....

Frisco Joe's Fiancee (Cowboys by the Dozen)
Published in Mass Market Paperback by Harlequin (July, 2003)
Author: Tina Leonard
Average review score:

I was in stitches
Tina Leonard caught my attention with Cowboy Cootchie-Coo. Then over the course of the next year she managed to steal my heart with books like Daddy's Little Darlings and A Match Made In Texas. So it came as no surprise to me to find out that Ms. Leonard had created another powerful story abounding with humor, emotion and romance with Frisco Joe's Fiancée, the first of her spectacular new series Cowboys By The Dozen.

It's round up time at the Jefferson Ranch, and there's a stampeding herd headed their way ' a herd of single women that is. Because unbeknownst to the Jefferson brothers someone has decided that this time they're the ones who are going to be rounded up and branded by wedding rings.

After all these years Mason Jefferson should know better than to put his trust in Mimi Cannady's goofy ideas, even if she is his best friend. Yet for some reason, even knowing her ideas can only lead to trouble, Mason just can't seem to find it in his heart to say no to her. Only this time, he should have, because once his eleven younger brothers get a hold of him he's going to wish he did.

Frisco Joe Jefferson is ready to scream. Not only did Mimi manage to once again convince Mason to go along with her hair-brained idea to hire a housekeeper without consulting the rest of them, but when twenty female applicants showed up to apply for the job in the middle of a blizzard, he was the one left holding the bag. A diaper bag, because one of the applicants actually showed up with her newborn baby in tow.

Annabelle Turnberry knew coming to Union Junction wasn't the best idea she'd ever come up with, but when the other ladies from the Lonely Hearts Salon invited her along for a mini vacation while they applied for a housekeeping job she couldn't say no. After all, now that her baby's father wanted nothing to do with her or their angelic daughter she needed to get away from men and figure out what she was going to do with her life.

One look around the Jefferson Ranch, better known as Malfunction Junction, and Annabelle realized she had come to the wrong place if she thought she was going to be able to forget about men, and not because of the twelve single and oh so hunky brothers who owned the place either. Nope, it was all because of one brother in particular, Frisco! In a few short minutes he managed to do the impossible and steal past her defenses when he tenderly soothed her cranky baby.

Frisco Joe's little brothers can't believe it. One minute die hard bachelor Frisco Joe's telling all the women to get packing and the next minute he's letting Annabelle sleep in his bed, while baby Emmie contentedly sleeps in his arms.

From the look that lights Frisco Joe's face every time he looks at Annabelle and Emmie these brothers have put two and two together and come up with the perfect little family of three. If only they can get him to open his eyes and realize what he's found before it's too late.

From the moment that busload of women arrived at 'Malfunction Junction' I was in stitches. I couldn't help it. From the entertaining characters to the snappy dialogue to the humorous storyline all the way down the line to the heartwarming way that Emmie wrapped Frisco Joe around her little finger, Ms. Leonard effortlessly caught hold of my heart and imagination and never let go.

Annabelle and Emmie were perfect for Frisco Joe. They completed him in a way that no other woman could have, something that Ms. Leonard seemed to have intuitively known when she was writing this story. I honestly don't think any one else could have brought him so vividly to life the way that they did. I also don't think that anyone could have helped Annabelle and Emmie to heal the way that Frisco did.

Well written, entertaining and thoroughly enjoyable, Frisco Joe's Fiancée is another high quality comedic romance perfect for an evening of fun and relaxation from the pen of one of the most talented authors I know.

And the best part is, there are twelve Jefferson's, and this is just the beginning. Ms. Leonard has a gift, for which I will be eternally grateful, that she so willingly shares with her readers.

good kick off to new series
The Jefferson Ranch in Union Junction, Texas, better know to locals as Malfunction Junction, is home to the twelve Jefferson brothers. Neighbor Mimi Cannady convinces the oldest brother Mason that they need a housekeeper to help out. Together they send an e-mail to a friend of Mimi's who runs an employment agency looking for an 'older' housekeeper (one that Mimi doesn't have to worry about Mason falling in love with). When something goes wrong with the transmission, the ladies at financially strapped Lonely Hearts Beauty Salon see the add and decide to all travel to the ranch to see if one of them can win the job. When the twenty ladies arrive at the ranch, Mason, the only brother that knew about the housekeeper search, is gone so it falls on second in command, Frisco, to get rid of the ladies. After the brother truck the ladies back to the bus station Frisco heads up to bed only to discover that one of the ladies, Annabelle Turnberry, and her two month old baby, Emmie, asleep in his bed. Emmie is a colicky baby but the minute Frisco picks her up, she calms down and sleeps. It's not long before rough, gruff Frisco is eating right out of little Emmie's hand. Then Frisco breaks his leg and Annabelle nurses him.

This is a great first book in the series. The other brothers were developed enough to make you anxious to read their stories but the main focus stayed on Frisco and Annabelle

Excellant start to mini series
Whoopee!! What a kick-off to this series. Tina has again tugged your heart strings with this page turning story of Frisco Joe Jefferson. And to think this is just the beginning - we still have eleven more heart throbs and macho brothers to come. This is a book for everyone, it has the hunky rough and tough cowboy who has not intentions of getting into the matchmaking trap, but who meets his demise at the hands of the single mom Annabelle Turnberry and her baby girl. Now as things are heating up bring on the next brother - Laredo. Way to go Tina!!!
